STAFFORD
SPRINGS, Conn. - Kelly Moore scored his first Busch North Series,
NASCAR Touring victory of 2002 Friday night at Stafford Motor Speedway,
swapping the lead with Dale Shaw and then holding off a final challenge
by Andy Santerre to win the Carquest Auto Parts Stores 150. It was
his 22nd career win, extending his own series record, and made him
the sixth winner in as many races this year. Andy Santerre made
a closing run at Moore, but fell .22 seconds short, while Dale Quarterley
held off Bryon Chew for third.
Dave Dion made a late move around early leader Dale Shaw to finish
fifth. Shaw, the only lead-lap car not to pit for tires, hung on
for sixth over Dennis Demers, Greg Schaefer, Tracy Gordon, and Bud
Pole winner Martin Truex Jr.
Shaw led the first five laps after redrawing the pole, but second-starting
Moore passed him and initially pulled away. Heavy traffic in the
middle stages brought Shaw back into range and he regained the lead
after 66 circuits. The race's turning point came on lap 90 when
Barney McRae's electrical fire brought out a caution flag. |
Shaw chose to remain on the track in the lead, but Moore, who emerged
from the pits in third, recaptured the top spot by lap 108. Then
it became Santerre's turn to play the hunter, nearly drawing alongside
Moore with less than ten laps to go.
Moore averaged 69.355 miles per hour as only three caution flags
consumed 19 laps, and won the Gatorade Front Runner Award by leading
the most laps. Greg Schaefer captured the Flowmaster Star of the
Race Award for advancing from 22nd at the start to eighth at the
finish. Robbie Harrison was the Raybestos Rookie-of-the-Race and
extended his point lead in that category.
Busch North Series point leader Matt Kobyluck retired with engine
trouble and finished 23rd, cutting his margin over Leighton to 22
points. Santerre is third, 36 points behind the leader, while Shaw
fell one spot to fourth but closed his
gap to just 45 points.
The Busch North Series continues next Saturday night, June 29, with
the Sunoco 150 at Holland International Speedway in Holland, N.Y.
