FALLS, N.Y. - A pit stop with less than 60 laps remaining put Andy
Santerre behind, but not out of contention in Saturday night's Little
Trees 150, the inaugural Busch North Series, NASCAR Touring event
at Adirondack International Speedway. Santerre charged through the
field to pass Matt Kobyluck for the lead with nine laps remaining,
scoring his third win of the season and further tightening an already
intense battle for the Busch North title.
Another winner was the new track itself, which provided side-by-side
racing to the delight of the capacity crowd which turned out for
the first race under the lights at the year-old facility, as well
as the debut of the Busch North Series in the Empire State's North
Country.
Kobyluck, the point leader, followed Santerre to the checkered flag
by .812 seconds, with point runner-up Brad Leighton third. The net
result was to move Kobyluck six points ahead of Leighton, with Santerre
just 49 points behind. Brian Hoar, a late race leader until Kobyluck
moved to the front with 14 laps remaining held on for fourth, followed
by Dale Quarterley and Bud Pole winner Kelly Moore. Defending champion
Mike Olsen, Dale Shaw, Mike Johnson, and Denny Doyle completed the
top ten. Of 29 starters, all but one was running at the finish,
and 18 were on the lead lap.

Santerre averaged 68.113 miles per hour and won $12,245 for his
13th career Busch North victory. The race was slowed seven times
by the caution flag for 39 laps, and the lead was exchanged eight
times among Santerre, Kobyluck, Hoar, Moore, and Martin Truex Jr.,
who fell off the pace in the closing laps and was scored 25th.
Moore won his record 44th career Bud Pole by lapping the nearly
circular half-mile track in 16.718 seconds, a speed of 107.668 miles
per hour, which automatically becomes the track record. Santerre
earned the Gatorade Front Runner Award for leading the most laps,
while Mike Gallo was the Flowmaster Star of the Race for gaining
the most positions. Jimmy Renfrew picked up the Raybestos Rookie-of-the-Race
honors.
The Busch North Series continues next Saturday night, August 24,
with the Irving Oil 150 at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough,
Me.
