LEE,
N.H. - Two-time defending NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch
North Series champion Andy Santerre kicked off the 2004 season with
his third straight opening day victory at Lee USA Speedway Sunday
afternoon. Santerre qualified third, took the lead from Busch Pole
winner Dave Dion on the 25th lap, and went on to lead 103 of the
150 laps. He averaged 54.641 miles per hour and took the checkered
flag 1.605 seconds ahead of Joey McCarthy, who ran second to Santerre
in this event for the second straight year. Eddie MacDonald, Ryan
Moore, and Mike Stefanik completed the top five.
Bobby
Dragon, Matt Kobyluck, Mike Olsen, Brad Leighton, and Brian Hoar
were sixth through tenth as 16 cars finished on the lead lap. There
were five lead changes among four drivers, but there was never any
doubt of Santerre’s dominance after he regained the lead
on lap 97 following his mid-race pit stop. Seven caution periods
covered 48 laps, the last coming out after Santerre received the
white flag.

Dion’s
Busch Pole was the 20th of his Busch North Series career, but his
first since 2000. He eventually finished 14th. Don Wagner, with
a career-best 11th place finish, claimed the PowerAde Power Move
of the Race Award after starting 23rd, while Ryan Moore scored the
first Featherlite Most Improved Driver Award, improving 30 places
from the last race of the 2003 season.
The
Busch North Series takes a three-week break before returning to
action on Saturday, May 22, at Thompson International Speedway
in Thompson, Conn.
