The "Racing For Clean Air" Team Captain Andy Santerre
Wins Lake Erie Over Johnson and Olsen

NORTH EAST, Pa. – Andy Santerre continued his march toward a third straight NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch North Series championship Saturday night at Lake Erie Speedway. Taking the lead from his main championship rival, Mike Olsen, on lap 111, he scored his second straight victory in the Local Dodge Dealers 150 over Mike Johnson. For Santerre and Johnson, it was a repeat of their finish in the inaugural event one year ago. Santerre’s Chevrolet reached the checkered flag just under half a second in front of Johnson’s Ford, averaging 59.752 miles per hour.

Olsen, who lost second to Johnson in the final 20 laps, held on for third an remains just 44 points behind Santerre as the 2004 season nears the halfway point. Bryon Chew and Kelly Moore completed the top five. Dale Quarterley came from deep in the field to finish sixth, trailed by Joey McCarthy, Mike Stefanik, Matt Kobyluck, and Bobby Dragon.

Brian Hoar won the Busch Pole, the first for a Dodge in modern Busch North Series history, but led only the first lap before Olsen surged in front. He would lead all but one of the next 109 laps, when Ryan Moore nosed ahead on a lap 50 restart. Santerre, starting third, bided his time until he passed Ryan Moore for second on lap 90 and set out in pursuit of Olsen, passing him after a two-lap, side-by-side duel. Ryan Moore’s late-race spin extended the event to 158 laps to achieve a green flag finish as required by NASCAR Grand National Division rules. It also allowed his father, Kelly Moore, to take over third place in the Busch North standings. Of 22 starters, 18 were running at the finish with 14 on the lead lap.

Dale Quarterley won the PowerAde Power Move of the Race Award for third time in 2004, improving eight places from start to finish, while Mike Johnson earned the Featherlite Most Improved Driver Award by topping his result in the last Busch North Series race by 21 positions.

The Busch North Series continues a busy month of July next Saturday, July 17, with the Waterford 150 presented by Big Y at the Waterford Speedbowl in Waterford, Conn.5. Matt Kobyluck 977
