The "Racing For Clean Air" Team Captain Andy Santerre
Finishes Second at Adirondack, Extending Points Lead

BEAVER FALLS, N.Y. – One week ago Matt Kobyluck experienced one of the lowest moments of his racing career when he crashed two cars in two races at New Hampshire International Speedway. Saturday night he turned the agony of defeat into the thrill of victory in the Kinney Drugs 150 NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch North Series race at Adirondack International Speedway.

Kobyluck took the lead on lap 95 when Ryan Moore pitted after a tangle with a lapped car and held it the rest of the way, except for one lap when defending race winner Dale Quarterley darted in front. He scored his first win since 2002 by exactly one second over point leader Andy Santerre, who extended his lead to 37 points by passing championship rival Mike Olsen on the last lap. Joey McCarthy was fourth and Brian Hoar fifth. Early leader Kelly Moore, Bobby Dragon, Jamie Aube, the resurgent Ryan Moore, and Mike Stefanik completed the top ten.

Two multi-car incidents proved important in the outcome. At lap 93 a lapped car moved down on leader Ryan Moore, causing Moore’s car to vault into the air. Remarkably, Moore kept the lead until pitting under caution two laps later, but fast-closing Bryon Chew was eliminated in the ensuing melee. Then, after Kobyluck had recaptured the lead on lap 135, challenger Quarterley got sideways in turn one. When the tire smoke cleared, both Quarterley and Mike Johnson were eliminated with damaged radiators.

Kobyluck averaged 65.902 miles per hour as 13 caution periods consumed 70 laps. There were five lead changes among five drivers. Both Jamie Aube and Kip Stockwell improved eight positions from start to finish, but Aube earned the PowerAde Power Move of the Race Award due to his higher overall finish. Kobyluck was the Featherlite Most Improved Driver Award recipient, besting last week’s result at NHIS 27 places. No Busch Pole Award was made as qualifying was cancelled due to the inclement weather which persisted right up to race time. The race was started under caution to complete the track drying process and later a lingering shower caused a brief caution period.

The Busch North Series resumes in two weeks with the Mohegan Sun 150 at Watkins Glen International on Saturday, August 14, the second of four appearances in combination with the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series.
